COUNTRYSIDE WARDENS
The wardens are here to enhance and protect Wigan’s wildlife and provide
recreational opportunities for local communities and visitors. Through
events and education programmes, wardens help people learn about,
appreciate and respect the countryside. Wardens act as a point of contact
for you. We are happy to offer advice and information, so if you see one
of us out and about, just ask; or you can telephone:
Pennington Flash Country Park (01942) 605253,
Three Sisters Recreation Area (01942) 720453,
Orrell Water Park (01695) 625338. Or you can e-mail
countryside@wlct.org
We are here every day from 8.30am till dusk. Visit the
Wardens webpage.

Borsdane Wood was Wigan’s first Local Nature Reserve…
...this means the wildlife, flowers and trees are all protected so
people can enjoy them all year, every year. Get away from it all;
surrounded by birdsong and enveloped in woodland perfumes, it’s the
perfect place to let your heart rate drop and your stride shorten. The
ranger service is leading a few guided walks through the wood over the
next few months, so they’ll be able to point out its finer points.
Alternatively, there’s a footpath running the whole length with benches to
sit on and simply take it all in at your leisure.
Orrell Water Park...
...has a good network of footpaths around the two former reservoirs
and enough walking to keep you or your dog fit and healthy (though please
don’t let your dog spoil it for everyone else). If you fancy something a
bit less energetic, both lakes are well stocked for fishing and open all
year. Either way you’ll be surrounded by an oasis of green and with over
125 different birds recorded in the park, always something to watch or
listen to.
The jewel in Orrell’s crown is the reserve area. We are hoping this piece
of land will become Wigan’s second Local Nature Reserve, and for very good
reasons. There are three ponds here teeming with dragonflies, damselflies
and butterflies all putting on acrobatic displays throughout summer.
Three Sisters Recreation Area...
...has seen Mother Nature reclaim
her own over the last 30 years. What used to be 3 slag heaps, hence the
name, is now somewhere people can enjoy long walks through woodlands, past
ponds, over fields and down to the Wigan Flashes. The new feeding station,
built with the help of Green Spaces Conservation Volunteers, allows you to
sit in the woods and watch birds close up. A brisk walk out of the woods
and onto the slopes is rewarded with views across to Winter hill, a great
place to sit and unwind after a hectic day around cars, noise and tarmac.
