Constructing a future
Local youth workers are going
the extra mile to help young people secure construction jobs.
The Wigan Council Children and Young People’s Services (CYPS) Youth
Service recently took eleven teenagers to and from St Helens for
Construction Skills Certificate Training at the Instant Training
Development Centre.
At the end of the week, the young people from Golborne, Ashton, Hindley
and Leigh sat their Construction Skills Certificate Scheme (CSCS) card
test. Anyone working on a building site must now hold the card.
The test covers accident reporting, manual lifting, working at height,
First Aid, using tools and all the key health and safety issues of
working on a building site.
Wigan Council Youth Worker Debbie Hall said: “Wigan & Leigh Connexions
Personal Advisors identified the young people as all having an interest
in working in construction. However, none of them held a CSCS card and
that is now required by everyone working in the industry.
“We are keen to reduce the barriers that prevent young people from
taking up jobs and this course did exactly that. Hopefully all the young
men will now find employment.”
The training costs were met by NEET hotspot money from central
Government and the Wigan Youth Service Area 2 team.
The government is aiming to cut the number of NEET young people by two
percent by 2010.
Young people interested in future CSCS card training courses should
contact Wigan Connexions on (01942) 768055 or Leigh Connexions on
(01942) 705800.
