Trust seeks extreme views
A couple of extreme sports enthusiasts will be riding into two Wigan
Borough parks on Sunday (September 24th) to find out if local youngsters
want a skate facility in their area.
Jan Johnson and Matty Andrews will be consulting youngsters at Lilford
Park in Leigh and Alexandra Park in Newtown, on behalf of Wigan Leisure
& Culture Trust.
The two extreme sports buffs will be finding out if there is an appetite
amongst local youngsters for skateboarding, BMX and blading.
Jan and Matty will also be informing young people what’s happening with
extreme sports locally and finding out what kind of equipment and
facilities would suit local riders.
Jan says: “Firstly we are aiming to find out if young people living in
both these areas are interested in having a skate facility in their
local park. If they do, then we’ll be looking to find out what sort of
equipment and features they would like to see installed in their local
park.”
Jan became the UK’s first Extreme Sports Development Worker when she
took up the post with Wigan Leisure & Culture Trust in 2001.
Matty, 20, from Ashton, has represented the local extreme sport
community at Township and Council meetings and has released two
skateboard films on his own label Destiny.
Matty is also launching a new website
www.skateupdate.co.uk next week.
The site will keep local riders right up to date with what’s happening
with extreme sports in Wigan Borough and it will act as a forum,
allowing people to discuss skateboarding, BMX and blading.
Jan and Matty will be at Alexandra Park in Newtown (next to the
basketball courts) between 11.30am and 1:15pm. They will be at Lilford
Park in Leigh (next to the bowling greens) between 2.45pm and 4.30pm.
All local youngsters are invited to go along and give their views.
