It is ball change for Tyldesley
netballers
Young players from Tyldesley Netball Club
are all set to try something completely different.
The girls are to take a unique challenge with boys from Orrell St James
ARLFC by having a go at each other’s sport.
The event will be held on Saturday June 28th to raise funds for both
clubs.
All the young people taking part will pay £3.50 to take part in two
hours of training and competition in netball and tag rugby at Holland
Moor Primary School in Skelmersdale.
The young athletes will then head to Orrell St James ARL Club for a
netball shootout, food, medal presentations and other activities.
Professional players from both sports will be attending the event, Wigan
Warrior Pat Richards and Northern Thunder netball player Lauren Dobson.
Emma Heap from Tyldesley Netball Club said: "There are a lot of
similarities within the two sports in terms of the skills needed to
play. The passing and catching techniques are very similar so we are
expecting both sides to be quite quick on the uptake.
“This event will give an insight into what is required to play rugby and
netball and reduce stereotypical views that are present within the
sports. It is also a great opportunity for the two clubs to raise funds,
which isn't an easy job."
The fundraiser is the brainchild of Jan Parkinson, whose daughter
Samantha (13) plays for Tyldesley Netball Team, while son Ryan (13)
turns out for Orrell St James ARL Club.
Jan said: “Netball is the biggest female sport in the country and rugby
is the biggest sport in Wigan Borough. This special day celebrating both
sports will keep children healthy, educate them about living a healthy
lifestyle, allow them to make new friends and reduce anti-social
behaviour by having children in a club environment and not out on the
streets.”
Spectators and anyone who wants to find out more about either club is
welcome to attend.
Tyldesley Netball Club and Orrell St James ARL both have a number of
teams, from under-7s to open age. The netball club also has a ‘back to
netball’ programme for women, which runs from 8.30pm to 10pm on Monday
evenings at Leigh Sports Village.
